After Pentecost, the church experienced great change. We see Peter preaching, healing, but hey! This is not the first time that the disciples healed and performed great miracles. When the Lord sent the 12 and them the 70. The gospels say that they healed the sick, rebuked devils, resurrected the death and preached the good news of the kingdom. They were amazed of how the illness and demons were submitted to them.
The power of the Holy Spirit seems to be more important than just performing miracles. The Lord Jesus also said that the smallest in the kingdom of God would be greater than John. The prophets and John the baptist were great and famous for their performance of the power of God through wonders.
It’s obvious that the power to perform miracles does not make you big in the kingdom of God.
This is proven in the scriptures in Matthews 7:22-23
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
1 Corinthians 12:7-11
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
Is it not enough for us to start thinking, hey what it’s this all about?
Then what is the actual power of The Holy Spirit?
According to Galatians 5:22-23 this is what the Spirit produces.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Is Its power based on its manifestation or based on Its fruit? Or is the power based on the efficiency to destroy the forces of evil?
Can the Spirit be manifested and not produce its fruits? The bible says that by its fruits, you will know them.
Therefore we can say, that there is no manifestation of God without the fruits of The Spirit of God.
Those spiritual manifestations from individuals who do not show genuine love and caring, peace, faith, etc are not from God.
Another particular thing about the fruit of the Spirit is that the writer refers to one single fruit. This means that the nine characteristics of the fruit of the Holy Spirit should be present.
It should not be faith without love or love without faith or without peace or with pride.
According to the scripture in Acts 1:8, the disciples would receive power by The Holy Ghost and they would witness Jesus.
Those who ever experience the manifestation of the Holy Spirit know that the Spirit convince us of sin when we come to Jesus, also know of the cleansing power that gives us the power to forgive and experience joy in times of trouble.
Therefore the power of The Holy Spirit is the power to defeat the forces of evil by the grace of God given to us through the word of Jesus Christ.
Speaking in tongues, prophesy, miracles do not guarantee the presence of the Holy Spirit. But to live a life of service to God in complete obedience to the words of Jesus Christ does.
But do not misunderstand what I am trying to say. The Spirit does manifest in Its church. It does produce fruits of love, joy, peace, etc. And not only that, It guides us to all true, just as the bible says.
